Random Blog Post 2

I wanted to do this as a precursor to the world we imagine.  I read the passage and that then inspired my random post.  Just because it made me realize the importance of mentorship.  So many things are dependent on how we are raised and grow up.  The way we think, act, and speak are all determined by our environment and what we were told was write and wrong.  This was even more prevalent before the internet.  This reminds me of this mma fighter that grew up to horrible racist parents.  They taught them their racist ways, and that was all he knew.  He didnt know anything else.  It wasnt until he came out of that racist town that he realized how horrible all of that really was.  While this is an isolated instance I do think about how important this really is.  I cant imagine where I would be without the guidance of my parents and family.

This is especially important because of how much I look up to my dad and mom.  My dad I have learned my values and work ethic.  He is a very smart and well read man.  Every night at the dinner table I would gain incredible insight.  This taught me how to think and reason.  Wisdom is the hardest thing to build because it isnt something you have but comes from understanding a multitude of other things which builds into a strong understanding of how things work.  Also my mother.  I have learned so many things from her as well.  How to be caring and take care for others.  How to develop meaningful conversations.  And also how to cook.  I have gained my love of cooking from her.  This has especially been apparent recently with more free time I am able to spend more time cooking.  This is why I have a few blog posts on here about cooking and my recipes.

The interaction with my parents have shaped me into who I am, and I cant imagine what I would be like without them.  This is what makes me realize just how important mentorship and this relationship is. And how all kids should have access to this.  I dont think that this is talked about enough.  Yes mentorship is becoming increasingly known in a business setting, but this is too late in the process.  Mentorship when you are younger allows you to get to the point where a business mentor actually matters.  Engraining values from a young age is crucial to a successful life and I dont think that this is talked about enough.  Not having these parental figures in a life can be very damaging to a kids trajectory, and it is not their fault as well.  I hope that when I am older I can change this and set up a place where this idea of mentorship and parental instruction can take place.

I am happy that technology is making this better.  Now it is nearly impossible to be buried in the bad ways of a racist town as in the case with the mma fighter.  There is so much access to great thinkers on the internet of which to learn from.  This access I think will have a huge impact on kids that dont have this mentorship at a young age.  I hope that this continues to grow.

  1. I definitely agree with you regarding the mentorship gap. I believe it's extremely important to have mentors one can look up to, not just in childhood, but throughout our entire lives. This gives one a significant advantage in life. I also agree that there is no reason why every human's basic needs should not be provided for. Ultimately, it should not be an uphill battle simply to exist in this world.

  2. Have to say, I was low-key expecting to read another post on receipts.

I really enjoy your posts. Mentorship has had a significant impact on my life; it's actually how I got into USC. I didn't know anything about the US education system when I got here, and neither did my mom. It's quite complicated and complex. Without the help and guidance from my friends, professors, and colleagues at Pasadena City College, I would never have been able to get here.

  3. Billy, despite this being a "Random Post" it was truly insightful. I too look up to my parents, and feel that everything I've learned is mainly thanks to them. It becomes something to think about, when like the MMA fighter are raised that way. Is he worthy of being forgiven, considering once he left the town he realized how wrong it was?

  4. Billy, this comment is from Raph, who can't access the Blog Master in Japan: "Billy, thank you so much for this, and I could not agree with you more. You and I were in the TIS mentorship program together, and we helped each other through it. Also, I really understand how important mentors were to you and I, so I resonate a lot with your piece!"

  5. Billy, thanks for sharing. I too understand how difficult it can be to maintain mentors throughout your entire life. It's been pretty cool to see how my parents have shaped me over my life, and the way I act like them now. But I know how difficult it can be to find a new mentor for the next chapters of your life, whether it be at work, relationships, etc. I enjoyed reading your post, and hope we can both find some great ones in the next chapters of our lives.

  6. I think you make very great points about mentorship. And that's an interesting story about the MMA fighter. I feel like that's less common now with people having access to social media and being able to experience other perspectives besides the ones in their immediate surroundings.
